Thomas Kohler: Where Sea, Memory, and Canvas Meet

Born in 1964 in Cape Town, Thomas Kohler spent part of his youth in Germany after his family left South Africa during the unsettled years of the 1970s. Educated in Cologne as a graphic designer, he returned home in 1988 and spent nearly two decades in the fast-paced world of advertising. In 2004, seeking a quieter and more meaningful rhythm, he turned fully to painting.

The sea has long shaped Kohler’s imagination. Ships run deep in his family’s history—his great-grandfather built them, his father sailed them, and family voyages across the Atlantic left lasting impressions. Living in Grotto Bay on the West Coast, he draws daily inspiration from the Atlantic Ocean, striving to capture its shifting light, moods, and power.

Thomas also paints people, drawn to the subtle drama of human interaction. A self-described traditionalist with a quirky edge, he paints largely for private collectors, preserving memories of places, families, and the enduring pull of the sea.
