Ilse Kleyn: Finding Grace in the Quiet Moment

Ilse Kleyn, born in 1971 in Vanderbijlpark, South Africa, discovered her gift for art at the age of six, winning her first competition before most children know what a calling is. Though she once dreamed of formal art studies, she entered the South African Police Service in 1990 at her father’s urging, serving for sixteen years as a police artist and later as a Captain in specialized units.

When she finally turned to painting full-time, her response was immediate and remarkable, with more than one hundred works finding homes in her first year alone. She later curated galleries before returning to the quiet discipline of studio practice.

Working primarily in oils, Kleyn paints birds, blossoms, figures, and still lifes with luminous colour and layered light. Her work seeks not spectacle, but revelation. The beauty of ordinary moments and the quiet faithfulness of God woven through everyday life.
