Gerhard Fourie: Painting the Color of a Life Well Lived

Gerhard Fourie’s artistic journey began long before he ever lifted a paintbrush professionally. As a schoolboy, he was known for sketching biology illustrations for classmates and drawing the sleek lines of Ferraris and Lamborghinis—early signs of a creative spirit quietly taking shape.

After school, he studied Physical Education at the University of the Orange Free State, earned a teaching degree, and completed two years of military service, as many young South Africans of his generation did. Teaching posts in Steytlerville, Velddrift, and later Port Elizabeth followed, where he built both a career and a family life.

Following twenty years in education, Fourie entered the business world, investing in a filling station. Yet it was during this season of life that painting truly called him home. Today, he is celebrated for his vibrant landscapes, richly infused with color and warmth.

Now living in Still Bay, surrounded by river and sea, Fourie continues to paint the beauty of the world around him.
