Craig Stuart: Painting the Quiet Power of Water

Craig Stuart, a Scottish-born artist now based in Cape Town, is a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art. Water lies at the heart of his artistic vision—both as subject and as method—shaped by early encounters that stirred equal measures of curiosity and unease: dark depths set against sudden flashes of light.

While living in Glasgow, Stuart often wandered the abandoned shipyards of Govan, where weathered steel and oxidised reds left a lasting impression on his palette. His approach reflects the discipline of printmaking—layered, restrained, and deliberate—while time spent along the coast of South Korea introduced an aesthetic of balance, clarity, and quiet movement.

Working between control and chance, Stuart allows fluid elements to shape the final image. In recent years, forms such as koi and lilies have emerged more distinctly in his work—the koi, especially, symbolising perseverance and transformation. His paintings and prints have been exhibited in galleries internationally.
